A Natural Mystery - Can you guess what it is? Give yourself a moment, and then scroll down...
Has anyone ever told you you were making a mountain out of a mole hill? This is a mole hill! I found it in a muddy field. The soil had lots of clay in it, and it had been there long enough to harden a little so that when I picked it up, it came up in one piece.
Sometimes moles tunnel near the surface - it's easy to see (or feel, underfoot) the ridges they push up as they dig. Sometimes they dig deeper tunnels. Then, they need somewhere to put the dirt they're removing, so they dig up to the surface and mound it up above ground. They don't actually want to exit - just deposit extra soil. That's why we see this little dead-end tunnel with no apparent nest chamber.
